Polar Coordinates, Infinite series, Partial differentiation and Multiple integrals. Applications of calculus include virtually every area of science along with business and economics. Even the applications of these concepts will be given by Mathematica in the Computer Lab our guiding star is that we are teaching calculus, not Mathematica.
CP 132 CITY IN HISTORY  (3-0) 3
The course examines the city in a historical perspective in relation to the philosophical, social, economic, technological and political contexts of the time period studied. It proceeds along with two axes: on the one hand, it examines the city in history from the first Neolithic settlements the ancient Greek Polis, renaissance cities to pre-industrial and industrial cities and introduces students to the key ideas, precedents and theoretical discourses relevant to city both current and historical, on the other. Thus it focuses on i) how philosophy contributes to an understanding of city by generating critical ideals of the city and city life and though critical reflection on cities; and ii) provides students of a perspective about how distinctive urban forms emerge within a complex interplay among social, economic, political and cultural forces.
CP 166 COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN FOR PLANNERS (2-2) 3
This course provides students with the effective use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) techniques for designing and drawing geometric objects with a focus on city and regional planning. Students will gain skills to make, edit and modify2-dimensional and 3-dimensional technical drawings using popular CAD software’s (Autodesk AutoCAD, Trimble SketchUP, Graphisoft ArchiCAD).Additionally, students will also learn geometric design and modelling in 2-dimension and 3-dimension as well as the basics of digital mapping.

CP 201 SITE PLANNING STUDIO (prerequiste-AR102) (4-8) 8
This is the first planning design studio for the undergraduate students of urban planning. It aims at introducing students with the basics of site planning and its details for a settlement in a neighbourhood size. These basics include (I) analysing a settlement on a selected site and its environment with geographical, topographical and climatic features and socio-economic structures; (ii) Planning and designing a new neighbourhood on that site with its required land uses, population density, building typologies and size, transportation systems, infrastructure and other urban features according to a set of “settlement scenarios” and (iii) developing plans and projects at the scales that vary from building to neighborhood of this new settlement.

The role and use of statistical methods in the study of urban and regional issues. The course will cover elementary statistics, applicable methods of probability, descriptive statistics, estimation, hypothesis, testing, regression analysis and the use of microcomputer statistical packages.

In this planning design class, the basics of planning process of a small new town are introduced to students. These basics include (i) analysing a settlement on a selected site and its environment with geographical and topographical features and socio-economic structures at various spatial scales; (ii) “imagining” a new town on that site with alternative urban forms and layouts and distributions of land uses, population density, transportation systems, infrastructure and other urban features according to a set of “city scenarios” and (iii) developing plans and projects at different scales for that new town.

The course begins with an exploration of the roots of urban sociology in its connections with the rise of sociology as a discipline and examines the key concepts, issues and classical theories of sociology. Then it focuses on the essential theoretical and phenomenal issues and problems of urban sociology. By taking a departure from the socio-spatial problematique, it elaborates on urbanization, industrialisation, globalization and urban restructuring, uneven development and spatial differentiation, urban poverty, housing question, urban life and urban culture and urban policy.

Basic concepts of economics will be introduced, including supply, demand, market equilibrium; theory of consumer behaviour, theory of production and cost, government interventions on price mechanisms. Introduction to basic macro economic concepts, national growth, gross-national product, income distribution, regional inequalities, theories of the development process: neoclassical, structuralist and other approaches. Economic structure and planning experience during the republican period of Turkey.
CP 256 QUANTITATIVE TECHNIQUES AND METHODS FOR PLANNING (3-0) 3
This course will focus on various types of techniques, methods and models used to analyse urban and regional policy, including the techniques for decision analysis, methods of forecasting, models related with location and travel behaviour, land-use models; methods and models for forecasting the regional income and employment.
CP 266 INTRODUCTION TO GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) (2-2) 3
GIS plays an important and critical role in the field of urban planning in current planning practice.In order to give the students a solid base working with GIS, the course focuses on computer skills, basic principles of cartography and spatial thinking. The theoretical lectures and practical exercises cover classical cartographic concepts, as well as concepts of state-of-the-art GIS techniques. The course emphasizes an integrative and interdisciplinary approach to spatial decision-making and problem solving and gives an introduction to GIS in natural and social sciences as well as in humanities.

Development of Planning Thought. A review of attempts to understand contemporary city and city planning processes. Theory is examined in order to explain the location, size, form and functioning of cities. Also, planning theory provides the critical discussion of alternative forms and arguments of decision making processes in city planning. Political, organizational, practical-ethical aspects of planning practice are explored.
CP 335 ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND PLANNING (3-0) 3
The course explores the fundamental concepts of ecology the interactions between natural environment and urbanization and the environmental problems created by the current trends in urban processes. Then it elaborates on the policy options and planning tools for creating sustainable urban environments and solving the environmental problems such as urban and industrial pollution chemical toxins, water scarcity, degradation in ecosystems, etc. The course also covers the methods for analysing and evaluating the adverse impacts of current trends of industrialization and urbanization on the natural environment.
CP 345 URBAN GEOGRAPHY (3-0) 3
The course begins with theories of the origin, growth and development of cities and then studies their contemporary economic functions, spatial structure and socio-cultural characteristics. It then turns to several current urban debates and public policy controversies. Most current issues have an explicitly urban dimension and many debates are impossible to comprehend without some appreciation of basic urban theory. That is why throughout the course we will examine the interplay between established “classical” theories of the city and new efforts to understand new processes new opportunities.

A continuator of CP 301 with an emphasis on the development of urban structure plan and action area plans in accordance with the Turkish planning practice. Action area plans may include projects on issues as Public housing, Industrial & Technological Sites, New urban development, Transportation, Urban renewal, Conservation, City entrance, Health, Tourism and Rrecreation.

The course covers the discussions on economic dimension of urbanization and basic concepts and theoretical frameworks developed within this context. It elaborates on the economic reasons of locational preferences of different sectors, economics of urban growth, urban hierarchical structure, urban land market and rationale of public intervention to land market.

Urban housing definitions and related concepts; location theories and urban housing locational principles of urban housing market, macroeconomic and microeconomic aspects; effects of housing demand and supply on forming housing market and related quantitative methods; actors in housing market; outcomes of housing market: filtering, vacancy chains and assessment of housing neighbourhoods and hedonic price index, transformation of housing settlements; housing policies and the state.
CP 384 LEGAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE ASPECTS OF PLANNING (3-0) 3
Evaluation of the urbanization process, spatial planning experiences and institutional structure of planning in our Country, evaluation of Development Act numbered 3194 and its related regulations. Discussions on “justice in planning”, “planning ethics”, “public benefit” and “governance” concepts in spatial planning processes. Discussions of real judicial cases related with spatial planning practice and their presentation and evaluation in the class.
CP 362 URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEMS (3-0) 3
Elements of urban infrastructure, systems of water, sewage and solid waste. Establishing the infrastructure demands of a region, city or site and methods for serving these demands. Integration of planning infrastructure systems to city planning process. Students are instructed to prepare a paper analysing the infrastructure problems of a particular site and the alternatives for solving them.

Experience in public and private planning or development agencies; designed to introduce students to professional employment and actual planning practice. Application of urban design theory, methods and techniques to specific large scale development and redevelopment endeavours with metropolitan areas. Strategies for change in large areas of cities to be developed over time, involving different actors. Developing designs in to a natural, man made, historical and cultural outlooks; enabling (F)desirable activity patterns; conceptualising built form; providing infrastructure and services systems. Involves architecture and planning students enjoying work; requires individual designs on design and planning guidelines.

The main causes and the proponents of the process of the urban degradation and its wider implication on the social, physical, economic, cultural and ecological qualities of the cities. II. This course is to teach the student with the basic concepts of engineering economics, finance mathematics, real estate and its related market analysis and appraisal. CP 438 URBAN POLITICS (3-0) 3
The course intends to construct a critical and relational perspective to problematize the production of urban space as a political issue with capital accumulation, class conflict, hegemony and ideology. Throughout the course, different cases of urban development practices, including EU, North and South American countries, Asian and African countries, will be presented and these cases will be discussed with reference to the concepts like capital accumulation, class conflict, hegemony struggle and state power. Different cases from different countries of the world will be discussed through comparing them with Turkish case to explain how the urban growth and planning, collective consumption and struggles for the right to the city large scale projects and urban social movements take place in the metropolitan cities of Turkey. The roles, strategies and political positions of the state capital and the different agents of civil society in these processes
will be elucidated.
